বীরভূম জেলার দুবরাজপুরে ত্রয়োদশ রত্ন মন্দিরের যে ঘরানাটি গড়ে উঠেছিল তার এক উৎকৃষ্ট নিদর্শন ছিল দুবরাজপুর বাজার এলাকায় শিব মন্দিরটি। দেব কুমার চক্রবর্তী মহাশয় লিখিত ১৯৭২ সালে প্রকাশিত 'বীরভূম জেলার পুরাকীর্তি' গ্রন্থে এই মন্দিরটির অত্যন্ত সুন্দর একটি বিবরণ আছে।
উক্ত বিবরণ অনুসারে মন্দিরের গায়ে টেরাকোটা ফলকের মধ্যে দিয়ে বিভিন্ন দেবদেবী , অবতার , সামাজিক এবং পৌরাণিক দৃশ্যাবলী ফুটে উঠেছিল। দরজার পাশে একটা লিপি খোদিত ছিল তাতে বলা হয়েছিল
"খোদিত কারিকর শ্রীগোপীনাথ হাড়ি সাং দুবরাজপুর এবং ১২৯৬ সাল"।
বিবরণে আরো উল্লেখিত ছিল যে এই হাড়ি শ্রেণীর মানুষের মধ্যে মন্দির নির্মাণের কারিগররা অত্যন্ত নিপুণ ছিলেন।
মন্দিরের মধ্যে তিনটি শিবলিঙ্গ বিগ্রহ হিসাবে পূজিত হয়।
David j Maccutchion মহাশয়ের গ্রন্থ থেকে জানা যায় যে মন্দিরটি সারে ১১ ফুট চওড়া এবং সাড়ে ১১ ফুট দৈর্ঘ্য বিশিষ্ট বর্গাকৃতি ছিল। মন্দিরটি স্থাপনার সময় ১৮৭৪ খ্রিস্টাব্দ।
বর্তমানে পরিদর্শন কালে সমগ্র মন্দিরটির অত্যন্ত করুণ রূপ পরিলক্ষিত হল। টেরাকোটা কারুকার্য প্রায় নিশ্চিহ্ন। মন্দিরের প্রবেশদ্বারের ওপরে একটি ফলক আছে তা হলুদ রং দিয়ে রাঙানো। সমস্ত মন্দিরটির গায়ে আর কোন ফলক নেই। পুরো মন্দিরটি সিমেন্ট দিয়ে প্লাস্টার করে তার ওপর রং করা হয়েছে। কেবলমাত্র ১৩ রত্নের শীর্ষ ভাগটি পুরনো অবয়বটুকু ধরে রেখেছে।
এই ১৩ রত্ন মন্দির খুবই অল্প সংখ্যায় ছিল। এই ঘরানাটি ও নিশ্চিহ্ন হয়ে যাবার পথে।
The Shiva temple in the Dubrajpur Bazar area was an excellent example of the thirteenth pinnacled temple style that was developed in Dubrajpur, Birbhum district.There is a very beautiful description of this temple in the book 'Birbhum jelar Purakirti ' , written by Dev Kumar Chakraborty which was published in 1972.
According to the said account, various gods, goddesses, avatars, social and mythological scenes were depicted on the terracotta panels on the temple. An inscription was carved on the side of the door which read
"Engraved by the sculptor Shri Gopinath Hadi of Dubrajpur and the year 1296". The description also mentioned that the craftsmen of this Hadi class of people were very skilled in building such temples.
Three Shivalingas are worshipped as idols in the temple.
It is known from the book of Mr. David J. Maccutchion that the temple was square in shape, 11 feet 6 inch wide and 11 feet 6 inch in length. The temple was built in 1874 AD.
During the current visit, the entire temple was observed to be in a very pitiful condition. The terracotta work is almost destroyed. There is a plaque above the entrance of the temple, painted in yellow. There are no other plaques on the entire temple. The entire temple has been plastered with cement and painted on it. Only the top part of the 13 pinnacled has retained its old form.
These 13 pinnacled temples were very few in number. This style is also on the verge of extinction.
