রাজবাড়ীর মন্দির চত্বরে প্রবেশ করলে প্রথমেই বাঁদিকে প্রতাপেশ্বর শিব মন্দিরটি অবস্থিত। পূর্বমুখী এই মন্দিরটি টেরাকোটা অলংকরণে অত্যন্ত সমৃদ্ধ একটি স্থাপত্য।
মহারাজা প্রতাপ চাঁদের স্মৃতি রক্ষার্থে তার স্ত্রী রানী প্যারী কুমারী দেবী এটি প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। কথিত আছে বর্ধমান রাজ পরিবারে জাল প্রতাপচাঁদ নামক ঐতিহাসিক মামলার নিষ্পত্তির প্রেক্ষিতে এই মন্দিরটি নির্মিত হয়েছিল।
মন্দিরে প্রতিষ্ঠা লিপি আছে ।সংস্কৃত এবং বাংলা উভয় ভাষাতেই এই লিপি আছে।

মন্দিরের প্রতিষ্ঠা শিল্পী হিসাবে বাঁকুড়ার সোনামুখী নিবাসী শ্রীরামহরি মিস্ত্রির নাম উল্লেখ আছে।
দেউল ঘড়ানায় নির্মিত এই মন্দিরটি পীড়া রীতি অনুসরণ করলেও তা সম্পূর্ণভাবে উড়িষ্যার রীতি অনুসরণ করেনি। মূল মন্দিরের চারদিকে ৫ ফুট উঁচু ভিত্তিতে সাড়ে তিন ফুট চওড়া প্রদক্ষিণ পথ রয়েছে।
